چکیده

[1] We studied the low-temperature properties of sodium and magnesium perchlorate solutions as potential liquid brines at the Phoenix landing site. We determined their theoretical eutectic values to be 236 ± 1 K for 52 wt% sodium perchlorate and 206 ± 1 K for 44.0 wt% magnesium perchlorate. Evaporation rates of solutions at various concentrations were measured under martian conditions, and range from 0.07 to 0.49 mm h 1 for NaClO4 and from 0.06 to 0.29 mm h 1 for Mg(ClO4)2. The extrapolation to Phoenix landing site conditions using our theoretical treatment shows that perchlorates are liquid during the summer for at least part of the day, and exhibit very low evaporation rates. Moreover, magnesium perchlorate eutectic solutions are thermodynamically stable over vapour and ice during a few hours a day. We conclude that liquid brines may be present and even stable for short periods of time at the Phoenix landing site. Citation: Chevrier, V. F., J. Hanley, and T. S. Hydrous Perchlorates and Their Relation to Humidity at the Phoenix Landing

Introduction: Phoenix showed the presence of ~1% perchlorate in the landing site regolith [1]. This ion is associated to sodium and magnesium [2], making these compounds ideal candidates for liquid brines on the surface. In addition, hydration-dehydration cycles may control the humidity. We study the stability of perchlorates (liquids and salts) under Martian conditions using a combination of e...

Thermodynamic Properties of Oxidized Forms of Chloride and Applications to the Phoenix Surface Chemistry

Introduction: the recent discovery of perchlorates (ClO4) by Phoenix triggered a high interest for this rare ion on the surface of the Earth [1]. Indeeed perchlorate solutions have very low eutectic favoring potential liquid water on the surface [2]. The mechanisms by which such a highly oxidized ion formed remain largely unknown. Two major pathways are possible: atmospheric oxidation of aeroso...

Aqueous Perchlorate Liquid Solutions at the Phoenix Landing

Introduction: The possibility of liquid water or brines on the surface of Mars is one of the most important topics in Mars research [1]. Recent results from NASA’s polar lander, Phoenix, have indicated the presence of perchlorates (ClO4 ) in the soil surrounding the landing site [2]. It is likely that these ions associate with either sodium or magnesium [3], which would make them ideal candidat...

Perchlorate Salt Effects on Rock Weathering on Mars at the Phoenix Landing Site

Statement of the problem: The Phoenix Mission was the first to land in the polar regions on Mars. The mission revealed three surprising results: (1) The surface at the landing site had a very low concentration of large size rocks, (2) The unexpectedly sticky nature of the soil prevented it initially from falling through one of the instrument’s screens as planned, (3) Perchlorate salt was found ...
